‘Parthian Dawn’ is the second volume of the adventures of Pacorus the Parthian and his companions – the fierce and proud Gallia, the ex-Roman centurion Domitus, the scout Byrd and the sorceress Dobbai – as they battle for their lives against the backdrop of the clash between the ancient world's two greatest empires.
After three years fighting by the side of Spartacus, Pacorus and his followers have escaped from Italy in the aftermath of the defeat of the slave rebellion. Made a king by the ruler of the Parthian Empire on his return, he has married his beloved Gallia and made the city of Dura Europos on the banks of the Euphrates his home. But his new kingdom is seething with discontent and surrounded by hostile desert nomads who are the sworn enemies of the Parthians. The aged King of Kings, the man who has united the Parthians for decades, then dies to cast a shadow of uncertainty over the empire, which erupts into full-scale civil war as one of the empire’s most powerful men, Narses, attempts to seize the high crown by force.
Pacorus is forced to fight both Narses and his scheming ally, Prince Mithridates, to preserve the realm and his own crown. And then the Romans, taking advantage of Parthia’s internal troubles, launch their own invasion of the empire. Will Pacorus and indeed the Parthian Empire survive the conflict that engulfs them on all sides?

This is the first review I've posted on Amazon. I feel that I must.
Parthian Dawn, the second book in Peter Darman's "Parthian" series, is as amazing as the first one. Not only do we get to enjoy an exciting tale based in the ancient world, but we get to do it from a point of view too rarely explored. As an enemy of Rome.

I'm afraid I have neither the credentials nor authority to say Peter Darman's novels are better than this book or that book, though I do devour historical fiction and I now rate him very high. Nor can I point out historical inaccuracies about dates, times, or places.
But I can say that it was refreshing to read a book which not only related the number of troops fighting in a battle, but also the types of troops, who was leading them, where they were positioned on the battlefield, how well trained and equipped they were, and which tactics they had available to them. The Parthian and Parthian Dawn both allowed me the chance to observe these monumental clashes of arms from the point-of-view of the stratagem.

And what it really comes down to is the writing. It's very well written and very engaging.

What I don't understand is why I hadn't heard of him before? If I hadn't run across him by accident I would have never known what I was missing out on.

Cheers Mr. Darman, and please keep writing.

Sequels often turn out to be a disappointment but this is not the case with "Parthian Dawn", the sequel to "The Parthian". Parthian Dawn is just as good as the first book and is a great historical novel. Not being an expert in the history of the Parthian Empire I'm not sure how accurate the history is but it seems fairly close at least in general outline although I don't think there were ever legions who fought in the Roman fashion in the Parthian army.

Parthian Dawn takes up the story of Pacorus, the Parthian prince who fought with Spartacus in the slave rebellion of 73-71 BC. Pacorus and his friends, including his soon to be wife the Gallic princess Gallia manage to escape from the final battle of the slave revolt where Spartacus is killed and make their way back to Parthia. Pacorus marries Gallia and is made king of Dura Europus, a Parthian province on the western side of the Euphrates. Everything looks good for Pacorus and Parthia but the death of the primary king Sanatruces plunges the empire into civil strife. The weak Phraates is elected to replace Sanatruces and the empire splits into factions with Mithridates and Narses becoming the main villains of the story as rebel kings. Pacorus has to jockey for position in the empire while at the same time fending off advances made by the Romans.

This is a very entertaining read that has great characterization and convincing ancient locations. There is plenty of discussion about military tactics but at no time does this become boring and the book was very hard to put down. Presumably there will be a third book (or perhaps even a fourth) because I get the impression we are leading up to the invasion of Parthia by the Romans in 53BC when Pacorus will no doubt have his final showdown with Crassus who defeated Spartacus.

Thoroughly recommended!
That is an amazing book. I am already reading the third part. It does sound a little bit like western society rather than historic Roman or Parthian culture. Some characters are a bit incompatible for the position they take. For instance, Gallia, the Pacorus’s wife, is more suitable for a different role rather than being a king’s wife. She lacks in manners, rude, unsupportive, and savage type person. She is out of place in the company of Pacorus’s friends. Other royalty members act appropriately. This one acts more like a peasant’s wife. Her beauty description cannot help. You still have an image in mind of some sort of bar attendant, definitely not a queen. But the story is great! I have enjoyed it.
Peter Darman is a skilled writer. I really enjoy reading the way he weaves a story. He's such a good storyteller that I want to love his books. And I would, if there wasn't so much male-bashing on one hand, and blonde-haired, blue-eyed woman worship. It was merely distracting in the first book when I consciously ignored it (this took effort), but I didn't get 10 pages into this book for Pacorus to declare how much he worships and adores his perfect wife, who is absolutely never wrong, condescends to him on a regular basis, insults him in front of people, disregards the etiquette of the culture she's been embraced by, demands everything she wants and has it either give to her instantly or she takes it anyway, is never held accountable for being reckless and impulsive, never gets injured, always makes the right decision, and all around acts like a privileged, entitled brat. But her husband, the Prince/King Pacorus, who gives her everything simply because her eyes are so blue and her hair is so golden and she's so gorgeous, just accommodates every single thing she says and does like a meek hound dog with his tail between his legs. And everyone in the Parthian kingdom worships her as a goddess while Parcorus is merely the lucky recipient of her presence, often dismissed to his face by people and barely tolerated.

Appreciation is one thing. I can flow with that. Showing that you have a strong preference for a certain archetype is perfectly alright. But the woman worship and man hating is just too heavy for me to overlook. So much of it unnecessary and adds mo value to the story, like the many snarky comments about how stupid or single-minded men are, and monologues about how perfect Gallia is and how she's a gift from the Gods to be worshipped. They really distract from an otherwise great story.
